With Easter fast approaching I was recently thinking about our Community Easter Egg Hunt, followed by our Easter Café Church and all the planning needed. I messaged our Café Church Team and set a date to meet and plan, dug out the plans from last year, set our graphic designer to task in designing our flyer and then I stopped and thought “Café Church is so different to conventional church – but what is church? Will people see ‘church’ in our café church?”
Perhaps one of my favourite Bible verses about church and what it ‘actually’ is reads: “I send this letter to you in God’s church at Corinth, believers cleaned up by Jesus and set apart for a God filled life. I include in my greeting all who call out to Jesus wherever they live. He’s their Master as well as ours.” 1 Corinthians 1:2 (Message Version)
I don’t know if you remember that children’s rhyme where you clasp your hands and sing “Here’s the church, here’s the steeple, open the door and here’s the people.” For me, I think this illustrates how I see church. It’s not a building or a finely tuned programme with beautiful music and inspiring preaching (although we try – but admittedly don’t always hit the mark J). It is just a group of people who have decided to model their lives on Jesus and what the Bible says and try to be Jesus in the places where they are. I found a wonderful quote by G K Chesterton, he says “We do not want a church that will move with the world, we want a church that will ‘move’ the world.”
For me, and I hope this is the reality of all churches, we want to make a difference in our communities, shine Jesus and all He teaches us, be good to our neighbours, serve the people who live near us and be a beacon of light, hope, healing and belonging.
Café Church is but one way of church trying to be a hope filled beacon in Lisvane. The church is laid out with tables and chairs (like a café). We decorate it to be inviting and welcoming, we provide quality coffee and nibbles and even colouring-in table cloths and activities for children. It’s fun and hope-filled and, we pray, inspiring. Our next café church is our Easter Egg Hunt Special. It’s on Sunday 25th March in the Memorial Hall. The egg hunt happens around Lisvane between 9:30am-10:30am. Families/teams get to chase 2 ‘bunnies’ around Lisvane and collect eggs in their family/team baskets. Back at the Memorial Hall, from 10:30-11:30am as the eggs are counted, we creatively explore what Easter means to Christians with a good cuppa, a hot cross bun and a fantastic all-age friendly atmosphere. All ages are invited and welcomed and last year at least had a brilliant time. AND the winning teams get a seriously good egg prize! Even the losing teams get some mini eggs to share.
This ‘is’ church, but perhaps not as we know it. We hope that as a church, we live a God filled life, which by default sees us serve the community we are in. Café Church is but a small part of that agenda. We hope it brings all ages fun and a taste of the hope that Easter offers. Please consider coming along this year and finding out for yourself if Café Church is in fact a place of light, hope, healing and belonging.
