The Big Tent Event

29th October to 5th November

Hopefully you read the article in last month’s Link explaining that St Denys Church and Lisvane Baptist Church (LBC) are holding a ‘Big Tent Event’ here in Lisvane this coming Autumn. With summer ebbing away and the nights drawing in quite quickly now, it’s rapidly approaching and our excitement is continuing to mount!

Since the last article we’ve had quite lots of people asking more about it … so we thought it was worth doing a quick recap.

What is the Big Tent Event?

It is a joint initiative between Lisvane Baptist Church and St Denys Church and our aim is to get as many people in the community involved as possible. We believe that as churches we have some very good news about Jesus that we’d like to share, and a core belief that God is interested in every person and every household. We also recognise that as a community here in Lisvane we have a lot to celebrate and be thankful for and the Big Tent Event is a wonderful way of doing that too.

Why is it important to St Denys and LBC to do this?

As churches, we know that many people see church as being irrelevant to them and the local community. We also know the days when people knew the stories of Jesus and basic Christian teaching have gone and we think that’s a great shame, especially so at a time when society is increasingly fractured and people need light and hope in their lives more than ever.

So, rather than wait for the wider community to come to church, we thought it was about time we took church into the community instead.

Where will it be held?

The Big Tent Event will revolve around a large marquee which will be placed on the field by Treetops Nursery. It is anticipated that ‘The Tent’ will sit approximately 250-300 people with flooring, lighting, heating and toilets.

When will it be held?

It will run from Sunday 29th October to Sunday 5th November. Please make a note of the dates in your diary and ring fence them. To make the whole thing a success we’re hoping that as many people from the community as possible will support it.

If you have children, there is a Holiday Club that will run right throughout the week so they certainly won’t be stuck for things to do over Half Term this year!

Who is it aimed at?

Everybody! As well as special church events and services there will be lots of other ways in which we are trying to bring the community together, including a ‘Community Showcase’ which we’re hoping will be exciting. As well as lots of things to join in together, there will also be specific activities and events for women, men, children, young people and older people too.

True religion …

As churches we’re working hand in hand with this and it’s been hugely enjoyable to bring people together in organising everything so far. People often think of ‘religion’ as being divisive but actually ‘true religion’ is all about serving God with passion, and people with compassion. It’s about bringing people and communities together, and not driving wedges between them. In fact in the Bible (Micah 6 v 8) we’re told that the Lord requires us to “do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God”. So ‘true religion’ isn’t about power at all, but rather it’s all about love and service and that’s our motivation for planning this initiative.

More details to come …

Over the next few weeks we will be putting the final programme together and sorting out the specific dates and times of all the events. Please keep a look out for more information about ‘The Big Tent Event’. In next month’s Link, we will include a list of all the different activities as they will happen day by day.

Big blessings to you
