Sunday 23rd March Morning Message

21st Century Prophets

Continuing the sermon series 21st Century Prophets Dave looks at the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy.

What’s a prophet?

Mike Riches in his book writes … prophecy is …

“A supernatural ability that God gives to believers to receive a message disclosed by Him.  This primarily (but not exclusively) is an immediate or spontaneous message that is communicated in diverse manners.” Mike Riches

Here’s another

Although several definitions have been given for the gift of prophecy, a fresh examination of the New Testament teaching on this gift will show

that it should be defined not as “predicting the future,” nor as “proclaiming a word from the Lord,” nor as “powerful preaching” – but rather as “telling something that God has brought to mind.” Wayne Grudem

This Weeks Reading

Corinthians 14:1‐5

14 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy. 2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. 3 But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort. 4 Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.
