Do not be afraid
As Chris said in his message on Sunday ’we are in unprecedented times….’ How often have you heard that recently? Also ‘social distancing’, ‘self-isolating’, ‘lockdown’…words that a few months ago we rarely, if ever, heard. Did you ever think that you would stand in a ‘social distancing’ queue at the supermarket and that someone would sanitise the trolley after you’d finished with it!
Another word that I’ve heard quite a lot recently is ‘scary’. The situation the world is in seems ‘scary ’to many people.
But remember – God knows our deepest fears, even the ones we cannot speak aloud, and the Bible, His holy Word, is full of wonderful promises and comforting verses. God does not want us to be afraid.
Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
We do not need to fear because
1) God is with us (‘I am with you’)
2) We have a relationship with God (‘I am your God’)
3) God gives us assurance of His strength, help and victory over sin and death.
One of my favourite Psalms, and one I turn to whenever life gets difficult is
Psalm 46 v 1-3
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
Reassuring words that we do not need to fear whatever trials and tribulations we go through. We do not need to fear because God is with us always and He is in control.
A lovely friend of mine often sends me the words of this beautiful song – so very comforting.
