Thought for the day

Counting our blessings

I always remember a conversation I had with a lovely godly lady a few years ago (some of you will know her as Eileen…). She said that every morning she thanked God for all her blessings – she ‘counted her blessings’.

God gives us so many blessings every single day. Sometimes it’s the simple things that we can so easily take for granted, like a roof over our heads, food to eat and clean water to drink. This strange time of lockdown has made many of us really appreciate how very blessed we are to have family and friends, beautiful local countryside to walk in or lovely gardens to sit in.

The classic hymn ‘Count Your Blessings’ reminds us to stop and give thanks for all God has done in our lives.

Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Joyce Meyer, in an article entitled ‘Count your blessing’ wrote

‘When we choose to give thanks to God for the blessings in our lives, we are literally ushering ourselves into His presence. It fills our hearts with peace, joy and hope.

We can be strengthened by God’s love, refreshed by his word, and fully energised to press on in our journey of faith.

So much of our happiness has to do with our focus…what we’re dwelling on in our mind. That’s why when we put our focus on God and all of the great things He does for us, it breathes hope into our thoughts, moods, and our entire day.

When we give thanks, we make God bigger in our eyes…and suddenly our problems seem smaller!’

In Ephesians 1 v 3 – 14 Paul writes:

‘Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.’ V 3

Paul goes on to list our spiritual blessings:

We are chosen and adopted as God’s children, we are loved, we are redeemed, forgiven and free, the Holy Spirit lives within us and we have hope for the future.

How blessed are we! And our spiritual blessings are everlasting! Knowing how blessed we are can help us to live each day with a feeling of abundance.

Have a very blessed day

Lesley
